Her Cumartesi, Fransız Kültür Merkezi ile benim 70 yaşındaki annesi gitmem. O son 10 yıl ya da öylesine sadık Fransızca dersi aldı.

1991 yılında babam öldükten sonra, o 47 yıl önce evlendikleri zaman durdu, annesi Fransız öğrenmek istediğini söyledi. O çok çalışkan, o her şeyi not almak, hemen her gün pratik ve o artık öğretmek mümkün olacağını hayal olur.

Every Saturday I take my 70 year old mother to the French Cultural Centre. She took French lessons faithfully for the past 10 years or so.

After my father died in 1991, mother said she wanted to pursue something that was stalled when she got married 47 years ago: to learn French. She is very diligent, she take notes of everything, practice almost everyday and you would imagine she would be able to teach by now.

Unfortunately for her, she is hard of hearing. So even if she wear her hearing-aid, it is difficult for her to follow a film for instance. At home we can access TV5 France and RTF, but she couldn't follow.

Mimicry is a big part of learning a foreign language. In the beginning, parrot everything, even if you don't understand what you are saying, plough on. Practice your pronounciation, read out loud everything you can read: news articles, advertisements, announcements, song lyrics...

In this self-teaching website I am using, they have a facility where you practice your pronounciation by recording your self in a conversation. Then post the recording online for other native users to comment. Just listening yourself speaking in the language is quite encouraging, although I myself don't know what I am talking about!
